Studioz At Stage 5 – Tour Down Under, Adelaide

Stage 5 of the Tour Down Under started in Snapper Point and concluded in Willunga.  I remember this stage last year and with two laps of Willunga Hill, this is where the Tour Down Under is won and lost.  It’s a really tough climb, trust me, with a 16kg Emily on the back of your bike, plus a backpack, it’s hard work – but you get a fair bit of crowd applause going up!!!

It’s a great stage of the Tour because, if you stand in the right place of the circuit, you get to see the riders go past 5 times.  It was much cooler today and barely any wind, so it was so much more comfortable for the riders.  Everyone had been waiting for it but it was the final climb of Willunga Hill that Cadel Evans decided to make his move.  Such a gutsy move and the crowd on the Hill went absolutely ballistic.  A few other riders caught up to him and a group of four stayed off the rest of the peloton to the finish.

Sanchez from Spain took out the stage win, with Cadel capturing fourth position in a great effort and a good test for his new BMC team.  Sanchez moves into second position whilst Andre Greipel still holds the Ochre Jersey.  All in all it was a fantastic day of riding and probably one of the best stages in TDU history.

As long as Greipel stays on his bike tomorrow, he’s going to take home the TDU trophy for 2010.  Stage 6 is a street circuit of 90km tomorrow and it traditionally concludes with a bunched sprint finish.  It will still be exciting racing so be sure to tune into SBS to catch the telecast live.
